Lake George's scenery is second to none, always changing with the weather and season's. The lake fills the whole valley with the mountains rising from the water to an average of 1800 feet. This natural alpine lake was formed during the Ice Ages -- carved out of the granite plate it rests on. The 300+ islands are the mountaintops of the lake bottom. There are two outflows. The primary is at the north end, flowing Lake George's water into Lake Champlain. The other outflow is in Dunham's Bay, eventually finding it's way into the Hudson River. Surprisingly enough, the primary source of the lake's water is not runoff from the numerous mountain streams, but rather the lake is artesian. There is a geologic fault running up the lake, providing most of the water. Because of the shearness of the surrounding mountains combined with cooling temperatures of the water, the weather patterns are often unique to the valley.
