Lake George was named
"Queen Of American Lakes" by the federal government in the 1960's.
It has attracted visitors from around the world since the first European to
see the lake, a French Jesuit priest, Father Joques in 1646. It is the area
featured in James Fenimore Cooper's novel Last of the Mohicans, as well
as the movies by that title. Annually, over 6.5 million people visit the Lake
George Region.
The Lake is 32 miles long, on average ~1.5 miles wide, reaches a maximum width of 4.7 miles, and reaches a maximum depth of 195 feet. The lake encompasses the whole valley -- the mountains rise out of the water an average of 1800 ft. The water quality is excellent, fully potable and supports a diverse marine environment. The only industry in the water shed is tourism, and is regulated to remain so.

Lake George Village anchors the lake on its southern end. The Village offers a plethora of accommodations, attractions, restaurants, nightclubs, shopping, and, of course, tour boats. This photo was taken from a parapet at Fort William Henry, the British fort burned by Montcalm in The Last Of The Mohicans. |

The Town of Bolton is the largest township on the Lake. Established in 1799, it predates the Town of Lake George by more than 30 years. Here in this very pretty village, you'll find friendly people, a pleasing mix of upscale shops, fine restaurants, and family accommodations. Bolton Landing has a large percentage of private homes. Seen in this photo is "The Narrows" island group, a state campground. |
